Corbin Library announces summer programs

On the courts and athletic fields, local schools often compete against each other, but the Corbin Public Library has issued a challenge to that will require them to work together this summer — if students can collectively check out 3,000 books over the summer, the principals have agreed to some rather creative rewards.

Corbin Public Library Youth Services Coordinator Lisa Kersey says this year’s twist on the Summer Reading Challenge is just one of several programs the library has planned to encourage participation among area youth while they are out of school.

At Corbin Elementary, Principal Sharon Ball has agreed to a pie in the face. Corbin Primary Principal Travis Wilder will also be getting a pie to the face if the students are successful. At Oak Grove Elementary Principal Regina Paul and Vice-Principal Tonya Faulkner have agreed to dye their hair pink and purple. And the students at Corbin Intermediate will receive some type of reward that has not yet been decided by Principal Bill Jones.

The student reading challenge isn’t the only program the Corbin Library has going on this summer. There is an array of other programs for all age groups and families.

The Library is partnering with the Corbin Main Street Program to host a community scavenger hunt. There will be a new clue every week at the library that leads them to one of Corbin’s historical buildings.

“We wanted to get family’s out with their kids this summer,” Kersey said.

When they find the building, they will bring the clue back to the library and that will allow them to enter for a grand prize drawing.

The teens have a new addition to their line-up of programs too.

On June 5, the library will have a special Fear Factor program. Registration and a permission slip are required to participate.
Tuesday story times will continue through the summer as well.

“The turnout for our Tuesday programs has gone up every year. Last year we averaged about 100 people in this small room,” Kersey said. “I love watching the kids smile and interacting with them.”

The Library has a reading program for all age groups that allows you to enter for prizes when you read the amount of books required for your age group. Sign ups begin tomorrow at 5 p.m. during the Library’s annual Ice Cream Social.
