Due to an apparent spike in orders, Aisin Automotive Casting said in a press release Tuesday they have been forced to hire some temporary workers to help handle the increase for the time being.
The move comes just weeks after the company announced layoffs caused by a decline in automotive production, which in turn, affected numbers locally.
John Gilbert, Aisin’s Human resource and General Affairs Manager at its London Plant, said in a statement that "because of the instability of orders, we’re supplementing our workforce with a small group of temporary staffing to offset the spikes in orders. These are only temporary measures and we look forward to building our full time workforce back to full strength as orders stabilize. However, at this time, the economy and the future of the automotive industry is unclear."
Three weeks ago, the company announced its second round of layoffs, this time effecting only its salaried team members, stemming from the struggling economy and the slowed auto market.
In a press release sent out on Tuesday via fax, John Gilbert, the London plant’s Human Resources and General Affairs Manager, said "due to further declines in customer demands and forecasted shutdown days/weeks by all of our automotive customers, the London facility is now forced to make employment reductions."
Gilbert explained that the company had previously announced an early exit incentive program to all team members that included enhanced separation payments and extended insurance benefits based on their years of service with Aisin.
Gilbert said this program was successful for the most part, but that further reductions had to be made.
The release goes on to say that as they move into the second half of 2009, additional VTO (voluntary time off) which will include paid insurance benefits for a period of time and priority recall privileges will be an option as production demands continue to increase or decrease.
Gilbert ended Tuesday’s release by saying that the company "appreciates the patience and understanding of our team members as we go through these difficult times. AAC fully intends on remaining an integral part of the local community for years to come."

Seems like kind of a rotten thing to do.
