UPDATED: Toddler dies after being run over by truck
A Rockholds toddler died Friday night after accidentally being run over by a pick-up truck driven by a family member.
Whitley County Sheriff’s Detective Chuck Davis said the 22-month-old toddler, Brooklyn Woods, only lived about 30 minutes after suffering "severe head trauma" as a result of the tragic accident.
Whitley County Coroner Andy Croley confirmed the cause of death Monday and said no autopsy was performed as part of the death investigation.
"The injuries were very evident and there wasn’t a need for an autopsy," Croley said.
The incident was reported to police at about 5:15 p.m. Friday and happened at a residence of Phoebe Fork Road – a gravel road just off KY 779 (Browns Creek Road).
"The girl was just playing outside and a family member pulled up to the house in a three-quarter ton truck," Davis said. "She stopped to talk to her husband and pulled forward and ran over the little girl. There was no intent to do anything wrong or anything like that. It was just a pure accident – the girl was just at the wrong place at the wrong time."
Both of the girl’s parents were home at the time. Davis said the girl’s father quickly grabbed her and put her in the family’s car to take her to Baptist Regional Medical Center. A Whitley County EMS crew met them near KY 6 in Woodbine and took the girl the rest of the way to the hospital.
No criminal charges are expected to be filed in the case.
Croley said Social Services performs separate investigations in the death of any child under the age of 18, but that criminal charges aren’t likely at this point.
"They have certain protocols and things they must do," Croley said.
Woods was the daughter of Josh and Samantha Woods. Visitation at Croley Funeral Home was held Tuesday. Funeral services are scheduled for today at 1:00 p.m. at Flat Creek Baptist Church.
Woods will be laid to rest in the Woods Family Cemetery in Rockholds.
