PREVIEW OF THE WEEK
CORBIN AT KNOTT COUNTY CENTRAL
When: 7:30 p.m., Thursday
Records: Corbin (5-1), Knott County Central. (1-5)
Coaches: Joe Beder (KC), Steve Jewell (Corbin)
Notes: It’s hard to take the Patriots serious when they have not had a winning season in years. At the bottom of Class 2A, Knott County Central has never challenged the Redhounds to date. Actually the teams have only played twice, but the Redhounds won 48-14 and 47-8.
Corbin Coach Steve Jewell can pretty much call out his own score in this game. He is not going to beat the Patriots in the ground and run up the score to the 60s or 70s.
He will give his starters a chance to play in the game then throw in the reserves. Look for Caleb Watkins to get a couple of touchdown runs, Ryan Fritts to have a good game and Roman Mitch to practice on throwing a the ball some.
Jim’s Pick: Corbin 48, Knott Central 6.
LYNN CAMP AT CLINTON COUNTY
When: 7:30 p.m.
Records: Clinton County (2-5), Lynn Camp (2-4)
Coaches: Jamie Miller (CC), David Mitchell (LC)
Notes: It’s a big game for the Lynn Camp Wildcats. Coach David Mitchell’s team needs to beat the Bulldogs to keep pace in the district race. The Wildcats have an overtime loss to the Eagles of Campbellsville. The fight for the top two spots rest on the shoulders of Campbellsville, Lynn Camp and Williamsburg, so the Wildcats need to do their part and win Friday night.
The Bulldogs had a little fight in them against Williamsburg last week, so with this being Senior Night at Clinton County, look for a spirited game at the beginning.
Lynn Camp started the season with three losses before defeating Pineville, 33-20 and Harlan, 21-15. They suffered a district setback to Campbellsville on a wet and muddy field two weeks ago. They will host Williamsburg in two weeks then close out the district schedule at Berea. Clinton County who has beaten lowly Casey County, 24-0 and Caverna, 28-0 for its two wins shouldn’t provide that of a challenge to the ‘Cats.
The Wildcats have a stronger team with more depth than the Bulldogs in the likes of Wesley Steele, Tyrone Person, Dylan Napier, Josh Smith, Jesse Keith and some other younger kids. Steele is leading the way for the Wildcats with 1,042 yards on 124 carries and six touchdowns.
Jim’s pick: Lynn Camp 44, Clinton County 22.
WILLIAMSBURG AT CAMPBELLSVILLE
When: 7:30 p.m.
Records: Campbellsville (4-3), Williamsburg (3-4)
Coaches: Jason Chappell (C), Jerry Herron (W)
Notes: Most coaches will tell you they play them one at a time and that particular game is the most important. That couldn’t be any more true than this week’s battle in Class 1A, District 6 when the Yellow Jackets head to Campbellsville. The victor of this game should very well be in the driver’s seat for a district title. A win by the Eagles will pretty much assure Campbellsville of the title unless they trip up against Clinton County, Oct. 23 and I don’t see that happening.
It’s a huge game for the Jackets. They still have to travel to Lynn Camp. First year coach Jason Chappell has turned a run-oriented team into a passing team with the help of veteran quarterback Aaron Schwoebel. His targets are Bryton Taylor. He has three times as many catches as anyone else on the team. To be close, he had 32 two weeks ago for 720 yards and six touchdowns.
With Ryan Moses throwing four touchdowns against Clinton County to give him 15 for the season along with his state leading 1,863 yards this should be a shootout. Four receivers have over 100 yards and at least two touchdown catches for the Yellow Jackets. Dusty Brown leads the way with 51 catches, 782 yards and six touchdowns. Daniel Pettit has 32 catches, 413 yards and four touchdowns while James Payne has 24 catches, 326 yards and three TD’s.
Jim’s pick: Campbellsville 58, Williamsburg 54.
LETCHER CENTRAL AT WHITLEY COUNTY
When: 7:30 p.m.
Records: Letcher Central (4-2), Whitley Co. (3-3)
Coaches: Hillard Howard (LC), Jim Black (Wc)
Notes: Most fans that know about 5A District 8 know this game may be for the district title. But, don’t tell Perry Central, North Laurel or Harlan County that.
The two teams have claimed the first two titles since it was formed with Letcher Central winning it in 2007 and Whitley County taking the crown in 2008. A Colonels’ victory will put Whitley County at 3-0 with a tough game coming up Oct. 23 in Hazard against Perry Central. Senior quarterback Jamie Lebanion had a big night against Clay County along with running back Alex Patrick, Josh Wynn and Cody Bramlett.
Jim’s pick: Whitley Co. 32, Letcher Central 25.
