To the Editor:
My name is Matt Daniels. I am a a Diatetic intern through the Utah State University and I live in the tri-county area. I am currently studying at the Whitley County Health Department in Corbin. Since being there I have realized that our area suffers from a diabetes epidemic.
This is very sad because this is a serious disease that is preventable by eating right and exercising.
Simple changes in your diet can steer you away from getting diabetes. Drinking water, controlling your weight, watching your blood pressure can all be beneficial for your blood sugar levels. Keeping a good check on your blood sugar levels will help you identify this disease early. Do not let your blood sugar get too low or too high because this puts stress upon your body.
If you are one of those who are affected by diabetes, try to keep it under control. Keep a record of what you eat and at what time.
Make sure you take your insulin and medicine as directed by your physician. It is important to be aware of many negative outcomes of uncontrolled diabetes, like kidney failure, vision problems, amputations and heart disease.
Seek out help if you have any questions. Your local health department is a great resource.
The nutritionist can help you make a fitting meal plan and have you feeling better soon. When it comes down to it, you are the only person who knows your body. Take care of it! Diabetes can be hard to deal with, but just think of yoruself as being sweeter than everyone else!
