Wm. Whitley DAR recognizes top 10 winners in their annual American History essay contest
The Wm. Whitley Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution recently recognized the top 10 winners of their annual American History essay contest at a reception including their teacher, parents and guests on Saturday, March 13, 2010 at the Whitley County Public Library in Williamsburg, Ky.
The essay topic was selected by the National Society of the DAR American History Committee. This years topic was “The Transcontinental Railroad” with instructions to describe how you felt when the golden spike was driven at Promontory Summit, Utah, to celebrate the completion of the First Transcontinental Railroad, pretending that you are either a settler planning to travel to your new home in the West, or an Irish or Chinese worker who helped build the line, or a Native American whose way of life was affected by the railroad.
Nine of the top 10 winners were present and read their essays. The essays originality, interest and the students expressiveness and enthusiasm in reading their essays were enjoyed and appreciated by their audience.
Certificates and dollar coins were awarded to the winners: Sydney Bunch, Cameron Hendrix, Fhazaneh Jackson, Makayla Mack, Rachel Meadors, Skyla Oaks, Raven Robinson, Brandon Souleyrette, Sydney Tye and Matt Young (accepted by Mrs. Sulfridge).
Mrs. Jessica Rains Sulfridge, fifth grade American History teacher at Williamsburg City School, was recognized for her participation and presented with a check as a token of the DAR’s appreciation.
Rachel Meadors took third place and received a certificate and a monetary award.
Brandon Souleyrett and Sydney Tye tied for second place and received certificates and monetary awards.
Cameron Hendrix was the Wm. Whitley Chapter winner and received an Excellence in American History Medal, a Chapter Winner Certificate and a monetary award. Cameron’s essay was forwarded for judging in Kentucky State DAR Essay Competition.
Hostesses Carolyn Falin and Emily Meadors provided refreshments for honorees, their families and guests.
