SERIES WINNER
After losing the first game to rival Whitley County, the Corbin Redhounds took the three-game series with a 12-5 win at House Field Tuesday night. The Colonels forced a third game in the district series with a 9-7 win over the Redhounds in the first game of the night.
Whitley County 9, Corbin 7
The Colonels scored twice in the top of the second, but the Whitley County lead was erased when Trace Vorbeck hit a three-run homer to left field pushing the homestanding Redhounds ahead, 3-2.
Corbin added run in the bottom of the second when Ben House was hit by a pitch and later scored on a bases loaded walk to Vorbeck.
Whitley County struck big in the top of the third, scoring four runs as Jeremy Daniels, Jeremy Berta, Travis Inman and Justin Partin all crossed the plate. The four runs left the Colonels with a 6-4 lead.
However, the Redhounds answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Vinnie Hoover hit a one-out double followed by a walk to House. Josh Farley hit a grounder between second and first for a base hit as Hoover scored on the play. A two-out double by Josh Coppock was enough to give the Redhounds a 7-6 lead.
The Colonels retook the lead in the top of the fourth with two runs on two base hits, a fielder’s choice and three walks. Daniels and Jeremy Berta scored in the inning. Whitley County added a run in the top of the seventh on a home run by Shawn Harris.
Corbin 12, Whitley County 5
With the game tied 4-4 after three innings, the Redhounds pulled away by scoring a run in the home half of the fourth and another in the fifth. The big blow to Whitley County came in the bottom of the sixth when they erupted for six runs. Two runs scored when Travis Smith hit into a bases-loaded error that allowed Duncum and Vorbeck to score for a 10-4 lead.
Smith scored on a squeeze play as Hoover laid down a perfect bunt. Hoover then crossed the plate on a Ben House double to right field.
Corbin took two wins in the series and goes to 2-0 in district play. Whitley County swept Williamsburg last week is now, 1-1. If they can take the series with South Laurel next week they will get the number two seed should Corbin win the series with Williamsburg.
