Corbin Board of Education: Tuition for out-of-district students will not increase
The Corbin Independent School Board agreed to keep the tuition for out of district students at $1,200 per year.
At the board’s monthly meeting Thursday, Superintendent Ed McNeel Corbin said 26 students from outside the district paid tuition to attend Corbin schools, the vast majority coming from Laurel County.
"I don’t expect that number to change dramatically in the upcoming school year," McNeel said in his recommendation.
We have not had inquiries like you would think," he added.
McNeel said Corbin has reciprocal student agreements with the vast majority of neighboring school districts including Whitley County, Williamsburg, Barbourville, and, at least through the upcoming school year, with Knox County.
"It cost about $3,800 to educate one average student for one year," McNeel said.
McNeel cautioned that if the number of students increases substantially in the upcoming year, the board may be forced to approve an increase.
Board President Lisa Cleary said given the economic situation, the board should do everything it can to keep tuition costs stable.
"It is hard enough on families right now," Cleary said.
