UPDATED: Corbin teen killed when motorcycle collides with truck in Verne community
A 14-year-old boy is dead and another man suffered life-threatening injuries Thursday night after the motorcyle the two were riding collided with a truck pulling a cattle trailer in southern Whitley County.
The accident happened near the intersection of Verne Road and Louden Road at about 7:15 p.m. According to authorities, the teen, Michael Kelly Burnette, of Corbin, was driving the motorcycle and was coming across Verne Road when it appears he may have failed to stop at a stop sign and then collided with the side of the trailer. The cattle trailer rolled over the the motorcycle and the two riders. Police say the motorcyle, a 1990 Yamaha off-road motorcycle, was a small dirt bike that was not designed to be on the roadway.
Twenty-one-year-old Jason Flannery was driving the truck and was uninjured.
The passenger on the motorcycle, 18-year-old Scottie Day, of Williamsburg, was airlifted to the University of Tennessee Medical Center for treatment of his injuries. Burnette was pronounced dead at the scene by Whitley County Coroner Andy Croley.
Police say neither Burnette nor Day were wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.
No alcohol or drug usage are suspected factors in the crash.
The accident is being investigated by Kentucky State Police Accident Reconstructionist Trooper Craig Reed. They were assisted at the scene by the Patterson Creek Volunteer Fire Department, Whitley County Sheriff’s Department and Whitley County EMS.
