Drugs or alcohol may have been factor in deadly crash on I-75 Monday night
Corbin Police say drug or alcohol use may have been a factor in a single-vehicle wreck Monday night on Interstate 75 in which Lauren Wilson, 27, of Corbin was killed.
According to police, Wilson was traveling south on the interstate near the 26 mile marker about 9 p.m. when she lost control of her Honda CRV, crossed the median and the northbound lanes before coming to rest upside down on an embankment.
"She barrel rolled four or five times across the northbound lanes," said Terence Moore, who witnessed the wreck as he was coming north in his RV.
Wilson was pronounced dead at the scene.
Corbin Police Capt. Rob Jones said the passenger, Anthony Barnhill, 26, of Williamsburg, was extricated by other motorists. He was taken by ambulance to Baptist Regional Medical Center and then airlifted to the University of Kentucky Medical Center where he is listed in critical condition.
Pam Wilson, a friend of Barnhill’s, said he has a broken collarbone, arm and ribs, and a punctured lung, but has spoken with family and friends.
Northbound traffic was brought to a halt for about two hours as emergency personnel worked to clear the scene. Among the debris scattered across the roadway was a bottle of whiskey that was nearly empty.
"We found alcohol in the vehicle and illegal drugs in her purse," Jones said
However, Jones said he did not know the specific drugs that were found or the amounts.
Jones said Whitley County Coroner Andy Croley is conducting a toxicology test on Wilson.
Corbin Police Sgt. Rob Hodge is continuing the investigation. He was assisted at the scene by Sgt. Glenn Taylor, Ptl. Steve Meadors, Whitley County EMS and the Corbin Fire Department.

The accident happened approximately 1 mile ahead of us as we were going north on I-75. Traffic was stopped for 2 hours. We heard that a car also hit a camper going northbound after it crossed over the median. So sad to see one ambulance with sirens and one without siren.
terrible.
