Letters to the Editor for 10-27-10

To the Editor:

This election is the most important one I have seen in my lifetime. At stake are bedrock issues, Capitalism v. Communism; Liberty v. Paternalism; Financial stability v. Financial chaos; Freedom of religion v. Freedom from religion; Job creation v. Job destruction; National survival v. National bankruptcy; Constitutional government v. Liberal agenda.

The Kentucky senate race is critical. Neither candidate is perfect. I doubt if any candidate for office ever was, if you dug deep enough into his or her past. Which of us has never done something stupid when we were in school or said something stupid later that we wished we could take back or phrase differently?

It’s important, though, to keep our eyes on the main thing. What can a freshman senator really do? He can’t alone, change Medicare, Social Security, "UNITE" or any other law or program. Any law he proposes must survive committee consideration, the vote of both houses and a presidential veto before it becomes law. What he can do, though, is cast one vote in the present, party oriented, partisan, senate, to stop ill advised, agenda driven, legislation. Every senator also has one vote on the confirmation of federal judges who can alter the course of our country with one decision and who hold office for life. In our present situation that one vote may be critical.

If you are happy with the way our country has been going lately, by all means vote for the candidate that fully supports the Obama agenda, but if you are not, there is only one choice. We will probably never be faced with a more important political choice. The entire future of our nation could well hinge on this one election or even this one vote. Whatever your views as to how you want this country to go, please vote. There is no more basic right or responsibility of a citizen.

I know not what course others may choose but as for me and my house, we will vote for Rand Paul.
