LOOKING BACK
The Corbin Redhounds fell behind early against Perry County Central and were never able to recover, losing 69-49 in Saturday’s Bobby Keith Classic.
Things were not as bad as they appeared however. It was a situation where the Redhounds did not match up well.
Perry County Central was tall with plenty of bulk under the basket. The Cornett brothers were 6’8” and 265 pounds and 6’7” and around 230 pounds. The Redhounds have no answer for that kind of size.
Brody Freeman, Taylor Jones, Hunter Sizemore and Travis Smith played excellent perimeter defense and Robbie Igo and Smith battled hard inside, but could do little against the Commodores size.
Not having Matthew Taylor, who was playing in an All-Star football game really hurt, because Matthew provides more scoring punch, defense and blocks out on rebounds as well if not better than anyone on the team.
The Redhounds were also coming off a very physical game with 13th region rival Clay County, losing 49-42 in overtime.
The Redhounds now must prepare for a big district game with South Laurel.
‘Cats pick up wins
The Kentucky Wildcats picked up two good wins, one over Notre Dame and another over Indiana.
The situation with Enes Kanter remains in limbo as everyone awaits a ruling by the NCAA on the university’s latest submission requesting eligibility for the big kid from Turkey.
This has to be frustrating for the young man. Early in the season I watch as he cheered his teammates from the bench, leaping to his feet with enthusiasm when the Cats made a big play.
As the delay extends further into the season I have watch Kanter’s body language change as now he mostly just sits on the bench motionless. He seems to be a fine young man, and I hope things work out well for him.
Back in time
The Whitley County Colonels came out firing on all cylinders, having won five games in a row. The Colonels certainly look to be a legitimate contender not only in the 50th District, but the 13th region as well.
Looking back I remember in the mid 60’s when Woodbine, Pleasant View, Rockhold and Poplar Creek consolidated to form Whitley County High School.
I think their very first team was one of their very best. Eddie Teague and Doug Kersey from Woodbine, and Paul Haynes from Pleasant View and J. W. Carmen from Rockhold were four of the starters as I recall, and all were really good players. The head coach was Clyde Hill, who always had a blue towel around his neck.
I always felt consolidation took something away from the small communities.
Redhound from the past
This week’s Redhound player from the past comes from a long line of outstanding players who played at the center position. From Ted Meadors to Tommy Adkins to Nolan Devaughn. This week’s Redhound player from the past was yet another outstanding center. Lanny Myers.
Lanny played for the ’58 Redhounds and was as tough as they come; Coach Walt Green always had the utmost respect for Lanny’s play.
Lanny Myers always a Redhound.
Proud Grandpa
Grandpa Clayton Taylor is very proud as Roy’s son, Matthew Taylor, who played extremely well in a post-season All-Star football game Sunday at Louisville St. Xavier. Matthew played an outstanding defensive game at linebacker to help lead Kentucky’s “Best of the Bluegrass” to a 28-12 win over Louisville Metro.
Greg’s two boys, Tre and Trent helped lead Evangel Christian to the 2A state championship while playing in the Super Dome in New Orleans. Evangel finished with a 15-2 record.
Not a bad weekend for Clayton and Pauline’s crew.
