Wife arrested for shooting husband in southern Whitley
A southern Whitley County man was taken to the hospital, and his wife was taken to jail after shooting him following a domestic dispute late Sunday afternoon.
Whitley County Sheriff’s Deputy Kenneth Shepherd charged Ginger Renea Bryant, 34, of 317 Hatti Lambdin Road, with first-degree assault.
Sheriff’s Capt. Greg Pace said that the shooting happened about 5:15 p.m. at Bryant’s residence, which is in the Wolf Creek community, following a domestic argument.
Ginger Bryant told police that her husband, Charles P. Bryant, assaulted their 16-year-old son during a dispute. In retaliation, she shot Charles Bryant once in the left leg just above the knee with a .25 caliber semiautomatic handgun, Pace said.
Whitley County EMS transported Charles Bryant to Jellico Community Hospital where he was admitted with a single gunshot wound.
Charles Bryant’s injuries are believed to be non-life threatening, Pace said. His son didn’t suffer any serious injuries.
When police arrived at the residence, Charles Bryant was sitting in a chair with a visible gunshot wound, and he told police that his wife shot him, according to an arrest citation.
Shepherd recovered a small caliber gun, and then went to the back bedroom where he met Ginger Bryant.
She told police that after a physical confrontation between her son and her husband, she told Charles Bryant not to touch her son again, and then retried the gun and shot him once just above the left knee, according to her arrest citation.
Ginger Bryant was arrested about 6:12 p.m., and lodged in the Whitley County Detention Center.
Charles Bryant was also charged with fourth-degree assault/domestic violence for assaulting his son.
Shepherd is investigating the case, and was assisted at the scene by Pace and Williamsburg Police Officer Elijah Hunter.

Wow…you go Sheriff Harrell….i support you 110%. I moved from Williamsburg because of the crook’s that used to run and rob the Sheriffs’ dept. I think i might move back when you get all of the ex deputies and thieves locked up or run out of town. ^5 to you Sheriff Harrell and all your new staff. Oh, and stay safe. You never know what desperate people will do when they realize they can’t steal from the county and get caught and are facing serious jail time.
