UPDATED: Corbin schools to appeal denial of reciprocal contract again to Kentucky Education Commissioner
With the current student reciprocal agreement between Corbin and Knox County School expiring at the end of the school year, the Corbin School Board is asking the Kentucky Education Commissioner to intervene.
At Thursday night’s meeting, the board voted unanimously to appeal the Knox County School Board’s decision to reject a proposed student reciprocal agreement for the 2011-12 to the education commissioner
Corbin Schools Superintendent Ed McNeel said barring a new agreement between the school districts, students currently attending school in the other district
"The Corbin board approved a new agreement at its last meeting and sent it to the Knox County School Board," McNeel said. "It was rejected by the Knox County School Board. We are appealing that to the education commissioner."
McNeel added that to his knowledge, the agreement with Corbin is the only one the Knox County Board of Education has not signed.
When asked about involving a mediator to resolve differences, McNeel noted the two sides engaged in mediation for the reciprocal agreement for the 2010-11 school year, but it was unsuccessful.
"They (Knox County) were willing to give anything," McNeel said.
Corbin Board of Education Attorney Bob Hammons said he will prepare and file a written brief and Knox County officials will have the opportunity to do the same. The commissioner will then set a date to hear oral arguments.
If either side disagrees with the commissioner’s decision, it may be appealed to the Kentucky Board of Education and then on to Franklin County Circuit Court.
McNeel noted that Corbin’s appeal of Knox County’s initial decision not to renew the reciprocal agreement is making its way through Franklin Circuit Court.
"The attorneys are taking briefs on the case," McNeel said.

It is sad when the Knox Co. School System is so crappy that they resort to such pathetic measures as combining Lynn Camp H.S. with the West Knox Elem. to try to make their test scores look better and voting not to continue what has been a very successsful agreement with the Corbin Schools. I live in Knox Co. district, my kids go to Corbin. My Children will NEVER attend a Knox Co. school even if that means I have to sell my home and move to city limits. The few students Knox is “stealing” from Corbin is not to going to be enough to improve Knox Schools miserable test scores. The only way to do that is to fire the current administration starting with Walter Hulett and then moving to underperforming teachers and staff. GO CORBIN AND KEEP FIGHTING FOR OUR KIDS!!!
Corbin is a great school system. Thank you for the update.
I love the NJ by the way.
This is what is wrong with our education system…these ppl care about revenue and not the childrens well being. Corbin schools do better than knox county schools…that is just a fact…..why the hell would you send your kid to some crappy school that wont give them a good education when you can send them to a better school. All the crap I hear about Laurel and Knox county schools is disgusting. Teachers selling drugs and doing drugs….student searches and constant problems at these schools made me move all my kids to the corbin system…and they have all exceeded my expectations in doing better than they were……my daughter was thrown off the south laurel bus because some girls in the back were smoking and she got blamed or it. LAUREL AND KNOX COUNTY SCHOOL SYSTEMS ARE TRASH!!!!!! Get A CLUE KENTUCKY!!!!! WHY DO YOU THINK WE HAVE SO MANY UNEDUCATED IDIOTS IN THIS STATE!!!!! WE NEED TO HAVE MORE SCHOOL SYSTEMS LIKE CORBIN!!!
