LADY COLONELS SPLIT

Whitley County senior Caitlyn Walden threw a two-hitter, walked four batters and struck out nine Knox Central Panthers and still lost the game, 2-1, Thursday at Whitley County High School.

However, the Lady Colonels came back the next night to beat the Barbourville Lady Tigers, 5-1 in Barbourville.

In the win over the Lady Tigers. Ashley Lindsey scored two runs to lead the Colonels past Barbourville. The Lady Colonels broke loose for four runs in the top of the third inning. Lindsay led off with a single then went to second on an error by the Lady Tigers. Simbree Sizemore reached base on an error while Leeanna Moses hit a single to drive in two runs.

Moses and Sabrina Sizemore added two more runs in the inning as Whitley County took a 4-0 lead.

Barbourville got on the scoreboard and prevented the shutout in the bottom of the inning. Lindsey added a run in the top of the fifth for the final margin.

In the loss to Knox Central, Whitley County leadoff batter, Lindsay scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning. Lindsay hit a single to left field then stole second. She scored on a hit by Jadon Dopel to center field that was misplayed when two defenders collided.

Whitley County missed on an opportunity to score in the bottom of the second when Syephanie Huffman led off the inning with a single. After a pop out to second by Emily Elliott, Bethany Powers hit a grounder to third that was booted. Huffman tried to go to third on the play but was picked off.

Walden walked the first two batters in the top of the third, but the Lady Colonels were able to get the lead runner on a fielder’s choice. Walden got the fourth batter of the inning to strike out, but an infield error allowed a run to score when Elizabeth Barrett reached first.

The Lady Panthers scored the winning run in the top of the fourth when Swafford crossed the plate on a Ivey double.

Whitley County left runners in the bottom of the fourth and in the bottom of the sixth. Dopel was thrown out on a controversial call at second base in the bottom of the sixth inning.
