LOOKING BACK
Typically, when the Redhounds and Tates Creek get together the outcome has been most often a tossup, with the Redhounds winning one, the Commodores winning one. This year, it was the Redhounds who came away with a 21-14 win.
The Redhounds got yet another sterling performance from their tough, hard running tailback Brady Foley.
The Redhounds coaching staff did an excellent job putting the Tates Creek defense in a position of being back on their heels most of the evening. Just before halftime the Redhounds mounted a drive from deep in their own end of the field with a little over two minutes to go in the half. The Redhounds spread the field and ran Foley and Matt Jewell up the middle gaining big yardage as they clock ticked away. With only three seconds left before halftime, Redhound quarterback Ty Cobb threw a beautiful pass into the outstretched hands of Hunter Grubb for a touchdown.
Some of the kids that caught my eye were; Brady Foley, who is a tough as anyone running between the tackles. Matt Jewell lays it all on the line and plays as hard nosed a brand of football as you will see. Hunter Grubb becomes better each week and is an excellent athlete.
Derek Mahan does so many little things that help the team win.
Josh Jewell has the best set of hands I have seen on a Redhound receiver since Steve Bird played in 70’s. Grant Grigsby and Tanner Powers played well on defense.
This coming Friday will bring about the return of an old Redhound rival as the Danville Admirals come to town.
The Admirals came to Corbin in 1955, and brought with them about 3,000 fans on a chartered train and riding a 23-game winning streak.
It was one of the five biggest wins in Redhound history. The 34-20 win catapulted the ‘Hounds to an undefeated season and a state championship.
The old rivals have met in many critical games over the years.
I believe I saw where Rockholds High School was having a reunion at the old school over the weekend. When I saw that, it gave me a good feeling, as I played basketball at the old gym when I was in high school many years ago as an opponent of the Rockholds Hornets.
Bill Bryant, Joe Broyles and a young man named Widner and I believe a McDonald boy played for the Hornets. My good friend Johnny Reeves is also an ex-Hornet player.
I know I have written about the old Whitley County schools, Rockholds, Woodbine, Poplar Creek and Pleasant View in the past, but those were golden years that hold many memories.
I will try not to sugar coat this, but that was the worst football team I have ever seen the University of Kentucky put on a field last Thursday night against Western Kentucky, and I have seen some really bad ones before.
I also thought the new uniforms the Wildcats were wearing looked weird, but after watching the Georgia Bulldogs running out to play Boise State in what looked like Halloween costumes, maybe an outfit that looks like you are wearing blue pantaloons on your shoulder pads is not so bad.
I have never been able to understand why the University of Kentucky never hired Howard Schnellenberger.
Coach Schnellenberger was an alumnus of the University and had been an All-American and had several years of successful coaching experience. I am sure he would have answered the call from his alma mater.
The powers that be at that time chose to go with a snake oil salesman named Bill Curry that was being run out of Alabama, one step ahead of the axe falling.
Some good news from the Redhound basketball program-Victor Berzetchki, a foreign exchange student from Brazil has enrolled at Corbin High School and should be a welcome addition to the basketball program.
According to Coach Tony Pietrowski, Victor has good size, handles the ball well and is an excellent passer. I saw him at Friday night’s game with Travis Smith and he passes the eye test.
