The Whitley County Colonels soccer team snapped a three-game losing streak Saturday when they tied the Letcher Central Cougars in Whitesburg, 1-1. Senior Alex Rains scored for the Colonels on an assist by senior Johnny Mahan.
Monday the Colonels got back on the winning side of the ledger with a 2-1 victory over the Pulaski Southwestern Warriors. The Colonels scored two quick goals in the first half then held off a surge by the Warriors in the second half to grab the victory.
Sophomore Hunter Keltner scored both goals for the Colonels. One came on an assist by Seth McCoy and the second on an assist by sophomore Cody Swafford.
“It was good to get some momentum going into the district tournament,” said Whitley County Coach Bosco Cupac.
The Colonels (8-9-1) will close out the regular season Thursday when they host the Monticello Trojans. Monticello is 5-10-1 on the season and own a 3-2 win over the Colonels in Monticello. The Trojans come to Whitley County on a two-game losing streak after Saturday’s loss to Garrard County, 2-1.
Corbin Redhounds
The Corbin Redhounds will also close out the regular season Thursday when they take on the Pulaski County Maroons. The Redhounds have dropped three of their last four games, losing to Madison Southern, 4-0, Berea, 2-0 and Madison Central 3-0. They defeated the Middlesboro Yellow Jackets last week, 7-0.
Sreak snapped
The Corbin Lady Redhounds saw their four-game win streak snapped Monday night with a 1-0 loss to the Madison Southern Lady Eagles. Coach Eric Steely’s team started the streak Sept. 22 with a 10-0 win over Bell County. Corbin defeated Lexington Bryan Station last week 3-1 with Whitney Baker, Amerah Dixon and Shelby Phillips scoring a goal each in the win.
The Lady Redhounds rolled past the Somerset Lady Briar Jumpers, 10-0, Sept. 26. Baker led the offense with four goals while Dixon added three. Morgan Boggs found the net twice and Taylor Rawlings once.
Corbin extended the streak to four games with a 2-0 win over Garrard County, Sept. 29, with Sydni Roaden picking up her eighth shutout of the season. Rawlings and Kaitlin Waddle scored for the Lady Redhounds.
Corbin (11-5-1) will travel to Oneida, Tenn., Thursday before hosting the district tournament next week. The Lady Redhounds earned the number two seed behind South Laurel.
Lady Colonel’s soccer
The Whitley County Lady Colonels are having another successful season under first-year coach Kelly Sawyers. The Lady Colonels picked up their seventh win of the season Thursday with a 2-0 victory over Wayne County. Sabrinia Sizemore scored the first goal of the game for the Lady Colonels followed by senior Shawnee Holbrook.
It was the seventh shutout of the season for Lady Colonels. They will close out the regular season at Letcher County Central Saturday.
