COLONELS ELIMINATED

The Whitley County Colonels saw their soccer season come to an end Monday night with a 1-0 loss to the North Laurel Jaguars. It was the second time that the Jaguars have ousted the Colonels in district tournament play.
Monday night’s game came down to overtime as neither team was able to score in regulation play. Whitley County had several opportunities to score, but came up just off to the left or right of the goal posts on shots against the Jaguars.
In the two five minute overtime periods again neither team was able to find the back of the net and the game went to penalty kicks.
North Laurel outscored the Colonels 2-1 as the Whitley County free kicks went to the right, left and over the cross bar. North Laurel keeper Nathan Carter was only challenged twice with junior J.T. Siler getting his ball into the net. Carter rejected the final effort by the Colonels to even the score.
Whitley County keeper Dalton Siler blocked two kicks, but two got past the senior giving North Laurel the win and right to take on Oneida Baptist in the semifinals Wednesday night.
The Colonels ended the season with a 9-10-1 record in just their second season of varsity soccer under coach Bosko Cupac. Whitley County was 4-5 in district play, beating the Jaguars 4-3 earlier in the season on penalty kicks. They won two games against Middlesboro, 4-0 and 2-1 and lost to district powers South Laurel 2-1 and Corbin 1-0. They split with Oneida Baptist, winning at OBI 3-1 and losing at home 2-1.
“We knew it was going to be a battle,” Cupac said. “I think we came prepared. We brought all the guns and had all the tools, but didn’t finish some chances I thought we could have finished and put away. But I think we played really well and controlled the middle of the field and had possession of the ball. We just couldn’t find the back of the net.”
“We’re still a young team and have only been around for two years and I cannot be more proud of my boys and how they came along as a team,” Cupac said. “Being able to develop the way they have in that short amount of time is amazing. They are still in the learning process of how to put teams away. It is something we have not learned how to do.”
“Hopefully, we will learn our lesson and move on,” Cupac said. “This team has not developed that killer instinct yet.”
Corbin 5, Middlesboro 0
The Corbin Redhounds advanced to the semifinals with a 5-0 win over the Middlesboro Yellow Jackets in the second game. The Redhounds scored the first two goals of the game in the first half then eased home for the victory.
Junior Ben Felten scored the first goal of the night within in the first three minutes to put the Redhounds ahead 1-0. Freshman Tulio Canineu added the second goal of the half at the 24:50 mark of the game. The Redhounds had eight shots on goal in the first half while the defense held Middlesboro without an attempt.
In the second half the Redhounds added three goals. Michael Brown scored the third goal of the game while Canineu added his second goal to put Corbin ahead, 4-0. Wayne Logan scored the final goal of the night for the Redhounds.
Corbin (7-7-1) will take on South Laurel in the semifinals at 6 p.m., Wednesday night. The teams met at Corbin Aug. 30 with the Cardinals taking a 3-1 decision in that game.
