BEST FINISH EVER
The Williamsburg Lady Jackets golf team finished third in last week’s Leachman Buick-GMC/KHSAA State Golf Tournament at the Bowling Green Country Club.
The Lady Jackets finished behind state champion, Sacred Heart and defending titlist Green County. Green County edged out Williamsburg, the smallest school in the field of 22 by just one stroke. Sacred Heart, number one for most of the year, finished well ahead of Green County and Williamsburg with a two-day total of 649. Green County had a 692 while Williamsburg carded a 693.
Shelby County (694) and Scott Co. (695) rounded out the top five.
Senior Becky Sharpe led the Lady Jackets with a seventh place finish. She had a tough first-round score of 81, but came back the second day and had the third lowest score of the morning with a two-over 74.
“We didn’t play as well as I would have liked,” Williamsburg Coach Jeff Sharpe said. “Those were our two highest round of the year.”
“This was a tough course and playing in the state tournament adds more pressure,” Sharpe said. “I am really proud of how the girls came back on the second day and proud of how they played all year.”
Freshman Bethany Jervis finished 29-over with a two-day total of 173. She scored an 86 on the first day, but came back to fire a 79 Saturday. She was 34th overall.
Sophomore Kaylee Akins was 44th overall after scoring a 177. She had an 88 and 89 for her two days. Sophomore Julia Higginbotham was 59th in the tournament, scoring a 92 and 96 for her 188 total.
Sophomore Kacie Cox, whose score was not in the team total, finished 73rd with a total of 106 and 104.
The third place finish by Williamsburg may be the highest a team from Whitley County has ever finished in state tournament play.
