‘HOUNDS MOVE ON

Freshman Taylor Waddle takes the kickoff to the 43-yard line to open the game.
The Corbin Redhounds will take on the Louisville Central Yellow Jackets Friday night in Louisville. The Yellow Jackets have won the Class 3A playoffs three of the last four years.
It will be an uphill battle for the Redhounds because of the quickness of the Yellow Jackets. “They are a very well balanced ball club,” Corbin Coach Steve Jewell said. “They have speed on offense and defense.”
“They have the (Anthony) Wales kid that everybody talks about, but they have more weapons than that,” Jewell said. “They have some good receivers and a quarterback (Tajh Milliken) that throws the ball well and scrambles really well.”
“You have to defend both him and the Wales kid,” Jewell said.
Wales has had some big games for Central this season, but none bigger than the Elizabethtown victory when he ran for six touchdowns and 355 yards on just 12 carries. He had five touchdowns against Henry County and ran for 194 yards on 11 carries. The senior back is averaging over 221 yards per contest and has had six 200+ games this season.
The Yellow Jackets enter Friday’s game with an 8-3 record, losing the three games by a total of six points. They lost the season opener to DuPont Manual, 23-20 before rolling off four straight wins. Central lost a thriller to Louisville St. Xavier 31-30 then rolled through their three district opponents by a 165-43 count.
Pleasure Ridge Park shocked the Yellow Jackets in the final regular season contest, 32-30, holding Wales to a mere 192 yards and three touchdowns. The Panthers did shut down the Yellow Jackets passing attack, limiting Central to 30 yards.
Jewell feels the biggest key to an upset would be keeping the ball from them. “We need to limit their opportunities to score and if they do make them take a long field instead of giving them a short field with turnovers.”
“We have to take away those big hitters, the turnovers and fumbles,” Jewell said.
The Redhounds controlled the tempo against Henry County, making it a low scoring game. Jewell hopes to be able to move the ball against Central’s big defensive line. “We will have to keep them off-balanced with our run-pass attack.”
“The kids will have to be focused and ready for a physical football game,” Jewell said.
In the win over Henry County the Redhounds put together a tough defensive stand to win 14-7. It was the least amount of points given up this season by the Redhounds.
The Wildcats lone score came in the fourth quarter when Brett Chilton picked off a Ty Cobb pass and scored from 24 yards out.
Corbin (7-4) controlled the tempo of the game and scored on its second possession of the game. After a Henry County punt rolled into the end zone for a touch back the Redhounds began an eight-play drive at their own 20-yard line.
Junior Matt Jewell was a key to the successful drive with a third-down run of 20 yards followed by back-to-back runs of seven and 11 yards, taking the ball down to the Henry County 32-yard line.
Foley then completed the drive with a three-yard run and an eight-yard carry to the Wildcats 21-yard line. Foley’s third straight carry went to the end zone for six points.
The Redhounds intercepted a Dakota Isaacs pass on the first play after the kickoff return at the Wildcats 27-yard line, but failed to convert and Derek Mahan had to punt the ball away.
Corbin got the ball back three plays later, but the Henry County defense held and stopped the Redhounds after a short drive to the Wildcats 33-yard line.
Again the Redhounds held and got the ball back with 1:36 left in the half on their own 12-yard line. Foley pushed Corbin out of the danger zone with a 16-yard run to the 28.
An interference call against the Wildcats gave the Redhounds a first down at the Henry County 42-yard. A nine-yard pass to Josh Jewell, who finished the night with six catches, gave the Redhounds a first down at the 37-yard line before time ran out to end the half.
Corbin started the third quarter where they left off before the break…driving the football against the Wildcats.
A Taylor Waddle return to the Corbin 49-yard line put the Redhounds in excellent field position. A pass to Josh Jewell and three straight carries by Foley had the Redhounds inside the Wildcats 30-yard line.
However, the Henry County defense stiffened and held the Redhounds. A fourth-and-one fumble by Cobb turned the ball over to the Cats.
After a three-and-out by Henry County, Corbin started yet another drive in excellent field position at the Redhounds 41-yard line with 7:30 left in the quarter. Corbin put together a 13-play drive that ended with Matt Jewell going in from six-yards out with 1:07 left for a 14-0 lead after Cai Jackson tacked on the PAT.
The Wildcats went on a 12-play drive that started at their own 20-yard line and ended with an incomplete pass at the Corbin 20-yard line. Corbin took over on down, but three plays later Chilton intercepted Cobb and went in for the touchdown.
Senior Tommy Bailey covered up the on-side kick by Henry County. The Redhounds failed to pick up a first down and was forced to punt with 6:59 left in the game.
The Wildcats took over at their own 14-yard line and drove the ball down the field behind Isaacs, the quarterback. Isaacs had 35 of the 54 yards and a 12-yard pass to brother, Blake Isaacs to give the Wildcats a first down at the Corbin 21-yard line with 1:42 left in the game.
However, the Corbin defense came to life as freshman Harrison Reedy broke up an Isaacs pass to his brother. Isaacs was met at the line of scrimmage on the second down and junior Dakota Robinson came up with an eight-yard sack on third down.
Facing a fourth-and-17 at the 29, Isaacs went for the long ball, but Matt Jewell knocked down the pass to end the drive with 1:02 left in the game. Corbin went into victory position and ran out the clock for the win.
