Corbin’s Brady Foley has been selected the News-Journal Player of the Year for the 2011 high school football season. Foley had an outstaning season for the Redhounds, who finished the season with a 7-5 record losing to state finalist Louisville Central in the second-round of the playoffs.
Foley scored 20 touchdowns this season after rushing for 1,623 yards. His biggest game of the season came against the Harlan Green Dragons where he broke loose for 348 yards on 34 carries and two touchdowns.
He was named the Player of the Week by WYMT for that effort.
Foley was also a big part of the Redhounds’ defense and had 52 tackles during the season.
The Rookie of the Year honors went to Williamsburg freshman Skylar Griffith who had some outstanding games for the Yellow Jackets, who finished the year 8-5 with a season ending loss to Hazard, who will also play for a state championship later this week.
In his first year of varsity action, Griffith had 71 catches for 1,616 yards and 16 touchdowns. He also had two other touchdowns for the Yellow Jackets.
Coach of the Year honors goes to Williamsburg’s Jerry Herron. Herron led the Yellow Jackets to its fourth Class A District championship in the last five years.
Many picked the Yellow Jackets to finish third in the district this season. He is 45-26 since taking over the Williamsburg program six years ago.
Herron guided one of the youngest teams in the state to the third-round of the playoffs. Williamsburg defeated Jenkins and Harlan High School before losing to Hazard in the regional final.
Freshman Austin Ysidro gets the award for Mr. Hustle/110 percent. He took over at quarterback during the third game of the season and had a combined 898 yards for the season with 651 yards coming on the ground by the young quarterback. Whitley County finished the season with a 3-7 record with a very young team as well.
