Deputies help injured elderly woman after neice expresses concern

Whitley County Sheriff Colan Harrell is encouraging elderly residents to check into medical alert devices after deputies found an injured 85-year-old woman in her bathtub Wednesday afternoon.
The woman’s niece, Joan Wilson, had called Whitley County Dispatch asking for police to check on her aunt, Edna Large, who she hadn’t spoken to since Sunday.
Sheriff’s Lt. Bill Riley and Deputy Todd Shelley responded to Large’s Ky. 904 home where they found her lying in the bathtub of her home.
She had been there since Sunday afternoon and was lying half in and half out of the tub unable to call for help or get out of the tub, Harrell said in a press release.
Shelley and Riley removed her from the tub, and Whitley County EMS transported her to Baptist Regional Medical Center in Corbin.
"Older persons or those subject to falling and being unable to get help should invest in the life saving options offered by several companies that include a necklace with an emergency button to electronically notify emergency services for help," Harrell said.
Large appeared to be disoriented, and apparently suffered only a few minor visible injuries, Harrell said.

There is an alternative device that works similarly to those advertised on TV. They sell them at Radio Shack. There is a button that people can wear, and they can be programmed to dial the number of family or neighbors instead of EMS. So, there’s no monthly charge, and it is some added security for loved ones who live alone.
It’s sad but Medicare will not pay for those medic alert necklaces. Not one cent, and it’s something that everyone should have.
