LADY COLONELS IN A ROUT
The Whitley County Lady Colonels remained undefeated in 50th District play with a 58-29 win over arch-rival Williamsburg Tuesday night at Lawson Gym.
The 25th ranked Lady Colonels upped their season record to 13-6 in the season and 5-0 in district play. They will meet the Corbin Lady Redhounds Feb. 3 in a deciding showdown for the number one seed.
Whitley County used a full court press to run out to a 14-0 lead before Williamsburg was able to get on the scoreboard.
Maria Johnson led the Lady Colonels’ offense with eight of the first 12 points. Senior Sierra Anderson had the other four points.
Carissa Conlin, a junior, got Williamsburg on the scoreboard with a pair of free throws at the 4:42 mark of the opening quarter.
Freshman Brandi Smith, the Lady Colonels leading scorer on the year, hit a 3-pointer to push the lead out to 17-2.
The Lady Colonels went on to take a 22-5 lead by the end of the first quarter.
The Lady Jackets (7-14) held their own in the next two quarters, playing Whitley County on near even terms, but was unable to make a dent in the margin.
Williamsburg cut the lead to 27-13 by out-scoring the Lady Colonels, 8-5 in the first three minutes of the quarter.
However, freshman Hallie Jones, Bethany Powers and Smith scored six unanswered points to give the Lady Colonels a 33-13 lead with 2:31 left in the half. The Lady Colonels led at the break, 35-15.
It was a low-scoring third quarter as both teams tossed in eight points. Whitley County out-scored the Lady Jackets, 15-6 in the final margin for the final tally.
Johnson led the Lady Colonels with 14 points while Smith added 12 points and Sizemore tossed in 10 points.
Conlin led Williamsburg with 11 points.
