Gas leak forces closure of Barbourville Street in Corbin Monday

Corbin Cities Utilities workers in the process of upgrading sewer lines had to make an emergency repair to a gas line near the intersection of Barbourville and Hamlin streets that was damaged in the process.
"It was a main gas line," said Corbin City Manager Michael Phillips, who was on the scene, adding that high winds dissipated any gas that escaped, precluding the need to evacuate residents.
Corbin Police and firefighters were called to the scene about 2:15 p.m. Police set up road blocks covering about a half-mile radius, while firefighters stood by in the event the gas was sparked.
Phillips said crews estimated the repairs to take about two hours.
The biggest concern was the impending dismissal of students from Corbin Independent Schools. Phillips said city officials are working with Corbin Schools officials to ensure students who cannot be let off the busses at home, are left in the care of a parent or guardian.
