A Corbin man accused of shooting his neighbor, Everett Morgan in the chest Friday morning is scheduled to return to court Tuesday, while Morgan remains in critical condition at UK Hospital.
Michael Wayne Whitehead, 64, is scheduled for a preliminary hearing at 11 a.m. to determine whether his case should be presented to a Laurel County Grand Jury. He has been charge with first-degree assault.
According to Deputy Gilbert Acciardo, public affairs officer at the Laurel County Sheriff’s Department, Whitehead allegedly shot 61-year-old Morgan in the chest multiple times with a handgun about 1 a.m. Friday at his residence on Earl Howard Road.
Morgan was able to reach a phone and called a neighbor who then called 9-1-1.
Deputy Kirk Mays responded to the scene, finding Morgan sitting on a couch in his living room. Acciardo stated Morgan was conscious.
Whitehead was found lying on the floor nearby along with the handgun deputies say was used in the shooting. Acciardo described Whitehead as, "semi responsive and highly intoxicated."
Morgan was airlifted to the University of Kentucky Medical Center.
Following an investigation by Laurel Sheriff’s Detective Charlie Loomis, Whitehead was charged with one count of first-degree assault and lodged in the Laurel County Detention Center. He is being held without bond.
