LOOKING BACK
The Corbin Redhounds turned in a very gritty performance against a Clark County Cardinals’ group from Winchester.
The Redhounds dressed 60 players and played many of them. Matt Jewell played with as much heart as anyone on the field and accounted for the decisive touchdown by breaking tackles and racing down the sideline 71 yards to the end zone.
There were many Redhounds who turned in good performances and caught my eye. Cai Jackson was all over the field and kept the pressure on Clark County’s quarterback all evening. Jackson also kicked the extra point that was to provide the 13-12 win for the Redhounds.
Cody Harp provided senior leadership with aggressive hard-nosed play. Grant Grigsby was another senior who led the shut down of the Clark County offense in the second half. Nick Mills caught the Cardinal quarterback at a critical time and was in there backfield all night. Tyler Cupp, Tony Bernardo, Zack Ingle, Cody Deaton and Dakota Robertson played well in the offensive line.
Taylor Waddle got the first start as a varsity quarterback and handled the situation very well. Hunter Grubb was very effective in the secondary as was Josh Jewell. Grubb and Josh Jewell are the targets on offense.
Last year Jewell and Grubb were a large part of the Redhound offense. Each was a sure handed receiver.
Tanner Powers plays both ways, on defense Tanner is a strong line backer and offensively Tanner is strong running the ball and is a very hard-nosed blocker.
Josh Coppock, like Powers, is a sophomore running back who can play both ways.
Both Clark County and the Redhounds line up with the quarterback about three yards behind the center with a running back on each side of the quarterback about a yard deeper. Of course when the Redhounds were pinned deep at their own one-yard line, they moved the quarterback, Waddle, over center in order to not get trapped for a safety.
The defensive stand the Redhounds made in the final two minutes was one for the ages.
Saturday the Redhounds will play Lexington Christian who coincidently won their opening game, 13-12 over Christian Academy of Louisville.
Congratulations go out to coach Phil Russell of the Lynn Camp Wildcats on the first of what I hope will be many wins.
I hated to see David Mitchell leave Lynn Camp after 34 years. Coach Mitchell devoted his life to heading up the Lynn Camp football program.
I did not know Dewayne Bunch or Mrs. Bunch, but I read the thank you letter Mrs. Bunch addressed to those who were helpful to her in a most stressful time.
I have never read a more elegant, or more beautifully written letter of thank you. May God Bless you, Mrs. Bunch and your family.
I would also offer my condolences to the family of G.J. Smith, who passed away Friday night, G.J. played basketball at Hazel Green, Laurel County and UK. He was the baseball coach at South Laurel for many years and ended his career at the school’s Athletic Director.
