The Corbin Lady Redhounds took a big step in gaining a spot in the upcoming 13th Region Tournament in Oct. with a 3-2 win over the South Laurel Lady Cardinals. In the three-team 50th District, Corbin now has wins over North and South Laurel. The number one seed gets an automatic berth in the region tournament and a spot in the district championship game.
It wasn’t an easy task for the Lady Redhounds who won the first, third and fifth games of the five-game match.
Corbin jumped ahead in the first game, 9-8, but had to hold off a South Laurel rally. The Lady Redhounds tied the game 15-15 when Vanessa Wiseman went to the line and gave her team an 18-15 lead. She had two aces. Corbin never trailed again.
The second game saw the Lady Cardinals took total control and eased out to a 12-2 lead as Corbin made some mistakes. Down, 24-14, Corbin rallied to within 24-20 before the final hit went out of bounds, giving South Laurel the win.
The Lady Redhounds jumped out to an 8-1 lead in game three only to see the Lady Cardinals come back and tie the game, 10-10. The contest was tied 15-15 when Corbin pushed out to a 20-16 and held off the Lady Cardinals, 25-21.
The excitement continued to build as South Laurel won the fourth game, 25-21, setting up a fifth and final game to 15 points.
It was South Laurel taking the early 3-0 lead only to see Corbin tie the game at 4-4. The game was tied seven times with the last being at 13-13. Brianna Shrout, a junior, served back-to-back balls that South Laurel hit out of bounds for the 15-13 win.
“That was a really tough game for us,” Corbin Coach Liberty Roberts said. “A lot of it is mental, there is a big competition for South. We get really excited and get our nerves worked up, but I am glad we pushed through in the end.”
“That is something we have gotten better at, coming from behind,” she said.
Roberts was concerned with her team’s serves. “I know in the third set we had 11 misses and that is very unusual for us. I don’t know if it was nerves or just not focusing,” Roberts said.
The Lady Redhounds will find themselves in another tough contest Monday night when Whitley County comes to Corbin. The freshmen begin at 5:30, with the varsity approximately 7:30.
The Lady Colonels defeated Harlan County Thursday night on the road and are 8-3 on the season. The edged Jellico Tuesday night on the road, 14-25, 25-14, 23-25, 25-15, 15-13.
