Williamsburg’s Chase Lowrie breaks away from the Allen Central defense on the opening kickoff for a touchdown.
Williamsburg rebounded from its loss to Tennessee’s Oneida High School to thump the Allen Central Rebels 54-6 Friday night at Findlay-Legion Field.
The win left the Yellow Jackets unbeaten in Kentucky and ranked among the top 5 Class 1A teams. They will have the week off before the Yellow Jackets begin their quest for their third district title in a row. They will face Campbellsville, who has finished second behind the Yellow Jackets the last two years.
Williamsburg has won seven district games in a row and 14 of 16 since 2007 when the current district was formed. Their only loss has been to the Campbellsville Eagles.
The Yellow Jacket football program can hit a huge milestone with a win over the Eagles. Williamsburg is one win shy of the coveted 400 wins all-time. The Yellow Jackets began football in 1927 and continued the program until 1930 when they dropped the sport. In 1946, the Yellow Jackets brought football back and have had a team every year since that time.
The Yellow Jackets were shooting for their second undefeated season before losing to Oneida two weeks ago. The 1964 Yellow Jackets finished the season 8-0-2. They tied Harlan (13-13) and Lynch (7-7). Lynch was declared the region champion that year because they had more first downs in the game since there was no tiebreaker in place.
The 1994 Yellow Jackets finished the regular season unbeaten, but Williamsburg got beat in the second-round of the playoffs by Cumberland, 13-8. The last team to finish the regular season without a loss was Jim Black’s 2004 Yellow Jackets. They lost in the third-round of the playoffs to Pikeville 29-22.
The school’s 399th win came last week as the Yellow Jackets rolled over Allen Central. Williamsburg made it look easy in hammering the Rebels early with 40 first quarter points.
Junior quarterback Dalton Sizemore hit on 9-of-13 passes for 201 yards as the Yellow Jackets rolled up 313 yards of total offense.
Williamsburg owned a 16-0 lead just two minutes into the game. Sophomore Chase Lowrie opened the contest with an 80-yard kickoff return to put the first touchdown on the scoreboard. A pass to Micah Purdie had the Yellow Jackets in front, 8-0.
A fumble gave the ball back to the Yellow Jackets and Sizemore hit Skylar Griffith on a 43-yard pass play down the sideline for the TD. Jefferson Patrick ran in the extra points for a quick 16-0 lead.
Before the quarter was over Sizemore hit Griffith with his second TD pass and Corey Shelton scored on a short pass play. Lowrie capped off the quarter with a 25-yard run into the end zone to put the Yellow Jackets ahead, 38-0. A pass to Shelton for the two-point conversion made it 40-0 at the end of one quarter.
Patrick scored on a seven-yard run in the second period as the clock began to run continuously for the remainder of the game.
