LOOKING BACK
The Corbin Redhounds went into the South Laurel game last night with a record of four wins and one loss. The one loss was to the Clay County Tigers/ Clay County has a very good shooting team.
The Redhounds shoot the basketball very well also. This match-up may well happen again in March in the 13th Region Tournament. Once again there is no prohibitive favorite in the 13th Region. With the games being played at Harlan County, it may give the Black Bears of Mike Jones an edge.
I have a feeling Coach Tony Pietrowski is enjoying coaching this year’s team.
The three little things all coaches like are: that his team will play hard, play smart and play together.
program’s wish list.
On December 14, the Redhounds will travel to Louisville to play last year’s state champion, Trinity and follow-up with a game at Spencer County Saturday. I saw Trinity play in the state tournament last year and I was really impressed with their speed and quickness.
I admire Coach Pietrowski for accepting the challenge and I fee the experience will pay dividends.
There will be ups and downs though the season, but this is a tough group of kids and Coach P will work them hard.
Occasionally I find myself in the Middle School Gym or as everyone knows it best, the Edwards Gym. The old saying of “If these walls could talk, what stories they could tell.”
It was a show place in 1937 when a slender young kid named Bobby Coleman led the Redhounds against Louisville St. Xavier. Coleman went on to become an all-time great basketball player and was even more of a gentleman.
The old gym has had All-Americans and professionals’ players pass through the doors.
The Kentucky Wildcats have not quite found their way to this point in time. The effort from Nolens Noel is something Coach Cal must appreciate, but overall it just seems that Alex Poythress, in spite of his outstanding physical attributes, would prefer to fall in the line and be a follower rather then assert himself into a leadership role. Archie Goodwin is assertive and I feel will develop into a great player, but what bothers me is that he seldom smiles.
I am not sure he is enamored by the coaching style of Coach Cal. One of the Cats said. “You listen to what the coach says, not how he says it.” I am not ready to fire coach Cal yet, but I do wish he could calm his demeanor a bit before he has a coronary or even worse compared to Bobby Knight.
As we enter the Mark Stoops era of football at Kentucky. I think back to the coaches who have done their part in filling the graveyard of coaches in Lexington.
There have been several coaches pass through Kentucky like Don Shula, Chuck Knox, Bill Arnsbarger, Blanton Collier and Howard Schellnenberger who has moved on to success in other programs.
I have always felt Schellenberger would have been an excellent choice and would have given the program a boost.
Coach Stoops may do very well, but I never saw his name on any other football
Names like Selvy, Birds, Smiths and Jack Garrett were all developed into stardom in the Rock building and there were many like myself who had the privilege bouncing the ball on the beautiful floor.
