Wiseman heads to Union College
From the time Vanessa Wiseman stepped on the volleyball court at Corbin High School you could tell special things would happen. Wiseman became the News Journal Rookie of the Year four years ago. Since that time Wiseman has been the News Journal Player of the Year, the Section Player of the Year and the Coaches Association Player of the Year.
She was the Coaches Association Player of the Year twice after leading the Lady Redhounds to back-to-back state volleyball tournaments.
Wiseman signed with the Union College Lady Bulldogs Tuesday at Corbin High School in front of her classmates and team members.
Union College Coach Chuck Amshoff said, “We are excited to have Vanessa. She is a student-athlete that can really play. She has a strong arm and still has a lot of room to grow.”
“We definitely need for her to come in and make an impact,” Amshoff said. “We graduated five seniors so we are going to need her to step up and I think she will be able to do that as a freshman.”
The Lady Bulldogs finished the season 17-17 and 13-5 in the AAC.
Wiseman said picking Union College was an easy choice. “I just couldn’t turn it down. A bunch of my family has graduated from there, so it was a good offer.”
“I know I will have to pick it up a lot,” Wiseman said. “I know it is going to be different than high school. I am sure I will be working throughout the summer to improve my skills.”
Corbin Coach Liberty Roberts told those watching the signing that Wiseman was a key player in her four years at Corbin High School. “She broke a lot of records,” Roberts said. During her senior year, she set the record for kills.
“I think she will do very well at the next level,” Roberts said. “She has a lot of natural ability and she really pushes herself more than a lot of athletes that I’ve coached in terms of wanting to be perfect. I think that drive will help her to do really well and learn a lot.”
“She is very coachable,” Roberts added. “I think the biggest thing she will have to adjust to in college is reading the offenses and defenses she will face in college.”
“In terms of skill as long as she keeps conditioning and pushing herself she will be fine,” Roberts said.
