STATE BOUND
Corbin will head to the girls’ state tournament for the first time since 1982.
Paybacks are sweet and Monday night’s Corbin win over Bell County was the sweetest ever. The Lady Redhounds held off the Lady Cats to win the 13th Region Tournament at Harlan County, 63-60.
Corbin Coach Jennifer Parsons knew she had to slow down Bell County leading scorer Maci Morris. Parsons put a chaser on Morris and the Redhounds defense stepped and held Bell County to 19 first half points. Morris was held to five points in the first half as Corbin took a 29-19 lead to the dressing room.
But, Morris turned loose in the second half for 22 of her team’s 41 points as the Lady Cats rallied to within one (61-60) before Kayla Wilson, the game’s MVP, hit two free throws with 10.5 seconds left. Bell County missed a shot at the buzzer as Corbin held on to win their first 13th region title since 1982.
Corbin will play Shelby Valley, the 15th Region winner, Wednesday, March 13 in the first-round of the Houchens Industries/Girls’ State Tournament in Bowling Green.
