Williamsburg 12-year-old seriously injured by falling tree
A 12-year-old from Williamsburg remains in critical condition at the University of Kentucky Medical Center after a tree fell on him Saturday.
Williamsburg Fire and Rescue Assistant Chief Larry Todd said Jordan Griffith was in the yard at his home on Second Street Saturday evening when a dead tree in a neighboring yard was blown over.
“It was an old, dead tree about six to eight inches around,” Todd said, noting bad weather including heavy rain and high winds had set in moments before the call went out.
Firefighters were called to the scene at 7:10 p.m. and were on scene within three minutes, Todd said and had moved the pieces of the tree off of Griffith within a few minutes.
Griffith was unconscious and not breathing well, but was breathing on his own, Todd said.
He was taken by ambulance to Baptist Health – Corbin. Because of the bad weather, Griffith was then taken on to U.K by ambulance.
Todd said he has undergone surgery on his skull and may have several fractured vertebrae.
“He is responding and has movement in his hands and legs,” Todd said.
Whitley County EMS and Williamsburg Police also responded to the scene.
