Lightning delays Williamsburg loss to North Laurel
After more than a 48-hour delay in the game, the North Laurel Jaguars defeated the Williamsburg Yellow Jackets, 31-14 during the Cumberland Valley National Bank Bowl.
“We didn’t handle things well,” Williamsburg Coach Jerry Herron said. “There were a couple of things that didn’t go our way.”
Plus, the Jaguars’ game plan was to run the ball against the high-powered Williamsburg passing game. “They wanted to slow down the game and did. They did a good job running the ball.”
Michael Nelson ran the ball 29 times for 175 yards and three touchdowns while Gabe Blair had 28 carries for 127 yards and a touchdown.
Still, the Yellow Jackets kept it close for three quarters.
North Laurel took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter on a two-yard run by Nelson and once the Jaguars got the ball back, Gabe Blair broke loose for runs of 17 yards and 10 yards to go into the end zone for a 14-0 lead.
Williamsburg came right back when Sizemore hit Corey Shelton on a 32-yard pass play, getting the Yellow Jackets on the scoreboard with 2:25 left in the half. Brentley Patrick added the extra points and Williamsburg was within a touchdown.
Williamsburg missed on a chance to score early in the third quarter when the Jackets took over at their own 37-yard line. Sizemore hit Chase Lowrie on a nine-yard pass and Sizemore broke loose for a seven-yard run to the 39.
A pass to Shelton and a personal foul left the Yellow Jackets at the North Laurel seven-yard line. Williamsburg failed to convert on three plays before giving Patrick the chance to boot a 17-yard field goal. He missed and the Jaguars took over.
A 38-yard pass to Cole Lewis set up a North Laurel touchdown that put the Jaguars ahead 21-7 with 5:56 left in the quarter.
Williamsburg came right back and cut the lead to 21-14 when Sizemore and company drove the ball from their own 20-yard line down the field in just four plays.
The big play was a 43-yard pass to Shelton, setting up the ball at the North Laurel 24-yard line. Sizemore broke loose on the ensuing play and bulled his way to the one-yard line. He scored on the next play with 4:32 left in the third.
It didn’t take long as Nelson scored his third touchdown on a 65-yard run to the end zone with 4:04 in the quarter as North Laurel took a 28-14 lead.
Kennedy added a field goal in the fourth quarter to put the game away.
The Yellow Jackets will host the Pike Central Hawks Friday night in their annual Alumni Bowl. The Hawks lost to Lexington Henry Clay 52-14 in the Pike County Bowl Friday night.
