Gospel radio station advertising rep indicted for stealing $5,573
A Whitley County Grand Jury indicted a Corbin man Monday morning for allegedly stealing $5,573 from WEKC radio in Williamsburg where he used to be employed.
The grand jury indicted Larry Day on 22 counts of theft by failure to make required disposition of property under $500 and two counts theft by failure to make required disposition of property over $500 but less than $10,000.
"It was a situation where he was an employee for a radio station where he sold ads," said Commonwealth’s Attorney Allen Trimble. "The allegations are that he converted some of the money he received for selling ads for his own benefit rather than giving it to the radio station."
Day denies the allegations.
"It is kind of a big shock to me that I would be indicted for anything. I have lived my life the right way and have done things the right way," Day said during a telephone interview Tuesday morning. "I didn’t take one nickel from nobody."
Day said that whenever he received money for ads, he turned the check or cash into the office, but couldn’t say what was done with it from there.
He maintains that the radio station still owes him money for back pay.
Day allegedly took a total of $3,448 between March 4 and Aug. 26, 2013. He allegedly took $1,400 on Aug. 23, 2011, and $725 on July 29, 2011, according to his indictment.
"How in the world could a guy take $1,400 from the station and people not know what is going on. I don’t’ even do the billing. They do the billing," Day said. "A small station like that doesn’t bring in $1,400 a week. Nobody is going to pay you $1,400 cash at one time. We’ve never seen a check like that."
WEKC is an AM gospel radio station located on Main Street in Williamsburg.
In addition, the grand jury indicted a local duo for allegedly robbing a Corbin man in late September.
The grand jury charged Ewell Chadwick Lawson, 36, and Melissa Schwartz, 33, both of Rev. H.D. Lawson Road, with first-degree robbery, theft by unlawful taking over $500 but less than $10,000 and first-degree wanton endangerment.
On Sept. 30, the two allegedly threatened the use of physical force on Joshua Duncan and attempted to slam Duncan’s hand in a car door while in the course of robbing him, according to the indictments.
They allegedly took an I-Phone 4 and manifested an extreme indifference to human life by wantonly driving and nearly striking Duncan with their vehicle, according to the indictments.
