Corbin swimmers impress at weekend invitational
From the January 8, 2014 edition of The News Journal:
Corbin swim team Head Coach Kyle Yeager described his team’s performance at Saturday’s meet, held at the Stiver’s Aquatic Center in Barbourville, as “excellent.”
“Many of the kids were still out of shape from the holiday vacation, and we had some who were sick, but we didn’t let that affect us. We dominated the meet.”
The boys placed third out of eight teams, and they placed first in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:41.41.
The relay team consisted of the following swimmers, along with their individual times:
Caleb Parker (25.85), William Reedy (25.60), Harrison Reedy (25.14) and Jacob Fuller (24.82).
“This finish has brought our guys possibly one step closer to going to state,” said Yeager. “Which never happens for a first-year team.”
The girls also placed third Saturday, with a total of nine teams competing in their division.
When all the scores were combined, however, Corbin ended up winning first place overall with a team score of 278, beating out Scott County (256), and Trinity (247).
“The teams that showed up for this meet were from all around the state, including the Louisville area,” said Yeager.
“A lot of them have been swimming in the state meet for several years. The fact that we stood up to them and gave them a run for their money says a lot about our athletes, and I think we will be talked about highly throughout the state now.”
The success of Saturday’s meet came after another impressive performance on December 21, when the team also won first place overall out of a total of six teams. At that meet, both the boys and girls took home first place in their divisions, and senior Jacob Fuller solidified himself as a strong potential candidate for state competition by posting a time of 24.71 in the 50 freestyle swim.
The boys 200 freestyle relay team also shined at this event, winning first place with a time of 1:47.93.
“For a first year program, we are doing excellent,” said Yeager. “I could not have asked for a better way to start off a program, and I am looking forward to what the kids can do the rest of the season, especially in the regional meet coming up on February 14.”
The regional meet is also scheduled to take place at the Stiver’s Aquatic Center in Barbourville.
