Corbin tennis players advance to semifinals of KHSAA state championship tournaments
Last week was a history-making one for the Corbin High School tennis program, as three competitors advanced all the way to the Final Four of the 2024 Kentucky High School Athletic Association State Championships and two more played their way into the Elite Eight.
The boys doubles team of sophomore Nate Hill and senior Quinn Maguet defeated teams from South Oldham High School and Lyon County High School in the first and second rounds of their state tournament. In the Sweet 16, Hill and Maguet took down Sushanth Muthuluru and Kaden Chandler from Eastern High School. In the quarterfinals, they eliminated William Tribble and Jacob Kramer.
On the final day of competition, Hill and Maguet came up against Aditya Shah and Walker Bush from St. Xavier High School in the tournament semifinals. It was an ultra-competitive match, but in the end the St. X duo was able to end the Redhounds’ historic run, going on to finish the tournament as state runner-up.
In the girls singles bracket, incoming eighth grader Isabella Lopez tore through the competition in the early rounds before picking up a big win over Audrina Schaefer from duPont Manual High School in the Sweet 16. Lopez followed up that performance with a win over Katie Lankford from Lexington Christian High School before falling to eventual state runner-up Willow Renton in the semifinals.
Also making an impressive run at state this year was the doubles team of Lindsay Jones and Katie Morton, both juniors, who defeated teams from Paducah Tilghman and Bullitt East high schools before securing a hard-fought win over Ryle High School’s Avery Love and Niveditha Selvaraju in the Sweet 16. Jones and Morton fell to eventual state champions Avery Voss and Lilah Shallcross (Sacred Heart) in the tournament quarterfinals.
