Tuesday Night Highlights: 50th District baseball and softball
The Corbin Redhounds successfully defended their 50th District championship crown Tuesday evening, while the Corbin Lady Hounds played their way into Wednesday’s softball district finals.
After wins over Williamsburg and South Laurel, respectively, the Whitley County Colonels and the Corbin Redhounds met up on the baseball diamond at Briar Creek Park to determine this year’s 50th District champion Tuesday evening. The Colonels managed to get out to an early lead, but some big at-bats midway through the contest allowed the Hounds to take control. They would not look back, going on to secure a 6-2 victory that improved them to a region-best 27-10 overall win-loss record on the season. With the loss, the Colonels drop to 26-10.
Both Whitley and Corbin will be advancing to next week’s 13th Region tournament, which will be contested at Knox Central High School in Barbourville. More details on that event will be available inside the May 29 print edition of the News Journal.
All-Tournament team members were announced at the conclusion of Tuesday’s championship game, and included Hunter Bundy (South Laurel), Henry Bowling (Williamsburg); Ethan Allen and Bryce Anderson (Whitley County); and Jeremiah Gilbert, Will Freeman and Noah Cima (Corbin).
In district softball action Tuesday, the Whitley County Lady Colonels gave Corbin all they could handle, but in the end the Lady Hounds were able to take advantage of some late-game miscues and pull ahead for what ended up being a 5-2 final decision.
The Lady Hounds, now 17-15 on the year, will face the South Laurel Lady Cardinals for this year’s 50th District championship Wednesday evening at Briar Creek Park in Williamsburg. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. From there, both teams will advance to next week’s 13th Region tournament at Lynn Camp High School.
With Tuesday’s loss, the Lady Colonels wrap up their 2024 campaign with a 15-19 final record.
More details on the 2024 13th Region softball tournament will be available in the May 29 edition of the News Journal.
