Update: Deputy jailers attacked, injured by inmate at Whitley Co. Detention Center
UPDATE
Williamsburg Police have released the name of a Whitley County Detention Center inmate, who allegedly assaulted five employees during an incident Thursday morning. Williamsburg Police Department Public Affairs Officer Steven Hill said that the man in question is Dylan Knuckles, 22.
So far no charges have been filed in connection with the incident, but Hill noted that Knuckles “will be charged.”
Hill said that it is unclear at this point whether Knuckles, who was apparently brought in by probation and parole officers, will be charged in the near future in connection with the assault, or whether investigators will wait and present the case directly to the Whitley County Grand Jury.
He is expected to face five counts of second-degree assault in connection with the attack.
ORIGINAL STORY
Details are still forthcoming, but it has been confirmed that an attack by an inmate at the Whitley County Detention Center Thursday morning resulted in non-life threatening injuries to both himself and multiple deputy jailers.
Williamsburg Police Chief Jason Caddell confirmed reports of an attack at the jail Thursday morning, saying an inmate who had been brought in by probation and parole officers got into a scuffle with deputy jailers. At some point during the struggle, the inmate gained possession of a sharp object, possibly belonging to one of the jailers, and ended up cutting two people who were later treated for their injuries at Baptist Health Corbin.
Four others, including the inmate, sustained minor injuries. Caddell assured that everyone involved in the incident would be okay. “It could have been a lot worse,” he said.
The identities of the inmate and the deputies have not been released at this time, although Caddell said the attacker would be charged with six counts of second-degree assault.
The Whitley County Detention Center released a statement late Thursday afternoon, stating that the incident took place at approximately 9 a.m. “Probation parole officers brought in a parole violator to be booked into the jail,” the statement read. “Shortly thereafter, while being processed, the arrestee became irate, agitated, and aggressive toward officers. A struggle ensued, and two officers sustained lacerations. Three other officers received minor injuries. All were treated and released from Baptist Health Corbin. The inmate sustained some hand lacerations, and was transported for medical treatment.”
The News Journal will update this story with additional details as soon as they become known.
