Redhound Theatre to revisit the ‘Roaring 20s’

Redhound Theatre is going back to the 1920s as the student bring the musical "The Drowsy Chaperone" to the stage beginning Thursday.
Redhound Theatre is going back to the 20s with its rendition of the musical comedy, “The Drowsy Chaperone.”
The story centers on “The Man in the Chair,” a middle-aged music fan who is recounting his favorite musical, “The Drowsy Chaperone,” as he plays his record of it.
The cast brings the record to life onstage, taking over his apartment.
“I saw the musical a couple of years ago. It is really funny,” said Corbin High School Theatre Teacher Schann Mobley when asked why she selected this for her students.
The Redhound Theatre rendition features a cast of 22 people. Jaren Arena plays “The Man in the Chair.” Ethan Maguet is the groom. Megan Leger is the bride. Preslie Peters plays “The Drowsy Chaperone.”
Mobley said while paying homage to other musicals, “The Drowsy Chaperone,” also pokes some fun at them.
“There are a lot of jokes pertaining to other musicals,” Mobley explained.
In addition, Mobley said it gives the feel of older musicals with the more polished feel and addition of musical number that don’t really advance the plot.
Mobley said she is fortunate to have so many talented actors who can also sing. Because of that, Redhound Theatre has produced a series of strong musicals including, “Little Women,” in 2012 and “Little Shop of Horrors in 2013.
“The kids do a great job of trying to keep up the standard,” Mobley said.
The curtain on “The Drowsy Chaperone will go up at 7 p.m. Thursday at The Betty Hamilton Center for the Performing Arts at Corbin High School. Additional performances are scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and April 24 and 25.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students.
Proceeds go to help fund future Redhound Theatre productions.
