Adding to our Top 10, there were plenty more big headlines in 2023
You just can’t fit all the news from a year into a top 10 list, like the one running on our front page in this week’s edition of the News Journal.

Sure, we get the big news events in there, but that doesn’t mean there still weren’t quite a few other interesting and memorable news stories in 2023, such as the death of Corbin native and famed former Eastern Kentucky University football player and head coach Roy Kidd, a Corbin man winning $1 million in the lottery, and the arrest of a Florida man, who falsely claimed there was an active shooter during NIBROC.
Here are a few of some of the other interesting headlines from 2023 that didn’t quite make the top 10 list this year.
- January – New and incumbent Whitley County officials sworn in during special oath of office ceremonies; Going out on a high note: After 54 years, Gibson’s Music in downtown Corbin closing its doors; Would-be burglar held at gunpoint in Woodbine.
- February – Williamsburg man found guilty in 2021 murder of girlfriend: stayed in apartment for three more weeks with body after her death; The Mint on pace to break its wagering record in February; Nicholas Rucker enters guilty plea to several charges, including murder.
- March – Williamsburg man wins $50,000 from scratch-off lottery ticket; Guilty plea entered in Daniel Nantz’s federal murder case; Corbin mayor selected to receive Tri-County Leader of the Year Award.
- April – Golden Alert for missing Whitley County woman ends with body found near trail behind her home; Williamsburg store owner fined for selling vape products to minors; Gary Barton inducted into Fifth District Lincoln Club Hall of Fame; First Baptist Church in Corbin celebrating 100 years of worship in main sanctuary building.
- May – Remodeled Williamsburg Tourism Center named after Alvin Sharpe; Cumberland Falls Clean-Up draws over 200 volunteers; Authorities unsure what lead one student to stab another student at local elementary school; Whitley County schools planning to add another school resource officer to its roster; Local attorney recants statements made after arrest on DUI charge.
- June – Old Tri-County Country Club property being sold via online auction; New human rights rally being planned in the wake of recent row at Corbin’s Sanders Park; Whitley County Board of Health votes to move forward with sale of Corbin clinic location.
- July – New York man leads officers from several police departments on chase from Williamsburg to Berea; Tabetha Housekeeper discusses her goals as new Williamsburg Independent School Superintendent; Kayaker, who went over Cumberland Falls last week, uninjured from dive.
- August – Williamsburg man arrested in Laurel County after claiming to be shot with poisoned arrow; Woman steals vehicle from gas station, returns it hours later; Man received first ever homicide conviction in Whitley County for overdose; Thieves steal cemetery fence.
- September – DUI crashes over Labor Day Weekend result in several injuries, one fatality; Investigation continues into shooting incident that claimed the life of a two-year-old in Corbin; Corbin Flea Market property has been sold.
- October – Future of Lane Theater uncertain after chaotic public meeting; 2023 SOAR Summit takes over Corbin Arena for two-day event; CUC customers to see increase in electric bills early next year; Foul play not suspected at this time in death of Whitley County Detention Center inmate; Applebee’s damaged by fire Sunday morning.
- November – Former jailer, others accused of wrongful death in lawsuit; Union, contractor reach last minute deal to avert work stoppage at Kentucky Consular Center; University of the Cumberlands to begin offering zero interest, forgivable loans next school year.
- December – Williamsburg zoning board meets to consider appeal of duplex project; Former Redhound Basketball Coach Billy Hicks passes away; Cases dismissed against women connected to cosmetology school in Corbin; Rogers reintroduces black lung bill named for Whitley County miner; Williamsburg man sentenced to 25 years in prison for charges that include attempted murder; Corbin City Manager Marlon Sams announces forthcoming retirement; Pilot admits to being under the influence during emergency flight: patient was being transported from Baptist Health Corbin.
