Truck overturns on Falls Hwy.
Two people were taken to Baptist Health Corbin Sunday night after a tractor-trailer truck collided with a Toyota Corolla and overturned on Falls Road.
Corbin firefighters were dispatched to the scene about 7:30 p.m. Firefighters had to extricate the driver of the truck, Jamie Baumgardner from the cab after the truck. Firefighters said Baumgardner’s legs were trapped under the dashboard and they had to remove the steering wheel and front window to remove him.
Micheal Goff, owner of Micheal’s Trucking out of Lily, is the owner of the truck.
Goff said Baumgardner had left the truck yard in Lily that evening and was going to the Speedway in Corbin to fuel up before hauling a load of polypropoline to South Carolina.
“We don’t allow out trucks to travel through downtown Corbin,” Goff said, in explaining why Baumgardner was on the bypass.
Before Baumgardner was taken to the hospital, Goff said he told him he was coming off the bypass when the one of the airlines to the trailer brakes broke loose. With another vehicle sitting in the left turn lane off the bypass, Baumgardner went into the right hand lane to avoid the collision. Because of the high rate of speed, Baumgardner turned into the south-bound lane where he struck the Toyota and overturned.
The driver of the Toyota was also taken to the hospital. His name was not immediately available. Firefighters said he was up and walking around before being taken to the hospital.
Two vehicles in the parking lot of Central Automotive Supply were damaged when the truck overturned. The vehicles were unoccupied.
In addition to treatment of his injuries, Goff said Baumgardner will undergo a drug test per company policy.
Traffic travelling south on Falls Hwy. was reduced to one lane as emergency crews worked to clear the scene.
Corbin Police are continuing the investigation.
