8th Annual Tri-County Conquer 5k set for Saturday

If you enjoy running or walking, want to have your picture taken with some superheroes, or just want to come out to show your support for a program that helps sexual assault victims, then you might want to head down to the Eighth Annual Tri-County Conquer 5k and Kids’ Superhero Fest, which will take place Saturday on Depot Street in Corbin from 8 a.m. – 11 a.m.

Starting at 8 a.m. there will be free kids events including inflatables, pictures with Bam Pow Creations and other local heroes and face painting.

There is a $20 entry fee for the race, which starts at 10 a.m.

There will be a t-shirt and bag for all pre-registered attendees and while supplies last. After the race, door prizes, trophies and medals will be awarded.

The event is organized by the Cumberland River Victims Services program, which serves Bell, Clay, Harlan, Jackson, Knox, Laurel, Rockcastle and Whitley counties.

The Cumberland River Victims Services Program provides free support to victims in emergency rooms 24/7, including weekends and holidays, and has helped survivors of sexual assault as young as five months old and as old as 92 years old.

Statistics show that someone is sexually assaulted every two minutes in the United States, and that 17 percent of men and 25 percent of women are or will be victims of sexual assault in their lifetime. Victims are assaulted by a known acquaintance 80 percent of the time.

Kentucky has recently been found to have the second highest rate of child abuse in the United States.
