Senior Heather Clouse was presented a game ball for scoring her 1000th point last week. She gave quite an encore last night, scoring 30 points in a 67-47 win over the Knox Central Lady Panthers.
It was a game many thought would be close as the Lady Panthers came in with a 13-3 record and several impressive wins.
However, the Lady Panthers were still no match for the top-ranked 13th region Lady Redhounds and 14th ranked team in the Commonwealth according to the Massey Ratings.
“Knox Central has a real good team,” said Corbin coach Jennifer Parsons.
“We struggled there at the beginning of the game but we got going we were able to run with them,” said Parsons.
“They came in averaging probably averaging 55-56 points a game,” added Parsons. “That’s not necessarily our style.”
“We wanted to control their tempo by playing good defense,” said Parsons.
Corbin jumped out to a 14-6 lead after Mikkah Rogers scored five unanswered points for the Lady Redhounds (15-1).
However Wendi Messer, one of the top players in the 13th region hit a three pointer then went to the lane for a basket that turned into a three-point play. Messer’s free throw with 2:10 left in the quarter got the Lady Panthers within 14-12.
Knox Central drew even closer before the end of the quarter when Ashley Sizemore went to the free throw lane at the 1:10 mark in hopes of tying the game.
Sizemore missed the first but hit the second and sliced the lead to one, 14-13.
Christina Sutton missed a three pointer just before the horn sounded. She was fouled and went to the line for three shots. She knocked down all three as Corbin took a 17-13 lead at the buzzer.
Kaysey Mills hit the first basket of the second quarter, pulling the Lady Panthers within two, but that would be the closest Knox Central got.
Clouse and Brittany Jackson hit a pair of free throws, Julie Jones knocked down a bucket from close range and it was 23-15. Before the run was over, Corbin had scored 15 straight points and had a 32-15 lead on a Jackson basket when Darin Mills called a timeout with 3:55 left in the period.
Corbin led at the half, 43-23 and led by as much as 27 points in the second half.
Corbin will be back in action Thursday night when they travel to London to take on the Lady Cards of South Laurel in a district game.
