50th District Tournament, Night 4: Redhounds fall to South Laurel in tourney finals
It was a disappointing night for the Corbin Redhounds, as they lost a heartbreaker to South Laurel, 64-59, in the championship game of this year’s 50th District tournament.
Things were tight from the start between these two rival teams, with Corbin holding onto a slim 18-17 advantage after one quarter. The back-and-forth action continued in the second quarter, and the Redhounds went into the half still leading by a single point, 33-32.
South began to turn things around in the third quarter, however, with tournament MVP Jordan Mabe scoring some key baskets to give the Cardinals a 48-43 lead going into the evening’s final period of play.
With under a minute to go, a three-point play by Corbin’s Brody Wells brought the Redhounds back to within two points, 61-59. South was good from the free throw line in the closing moments of the game, though, going 3-for-4 from the charity stripe to pull out the 64-59 victory.
Corbin will now regroup and await their draw in this year’s 13th Region tournament, which kicks off next week at the Arena. The News Journal will provide an update once the tournament draw is complete, and all of the pairings are made known.
