50th and 51st District volleyball champions crowned
The Whitley County Lady Colonels volleyball team successfully defended their 51st District championship Tuesday night, defeating the Lynn Camp Lady Wildcats in three straight sets (25-10, 25-10, 25-14) at Knox Central High School in Barbourville. With the win, the Colonels improve to 27-8 on the year while Lynn Camp falls to 18-11.
Also Tuesday, the Corbin Lady Redhounds avenged their 3-1 loss in last year’s 50th District finals by defeating the Lady Cards on their home court, 3-2. South won set one (27-25), but the Hounds bounced back and won sets two (25-23) and three (25-18). Set four went to the Cards (25-16), and then Corbin was able to win set five (15-9), taking the match and this year’s district crown. The win puts the Lady Hounds at 23-8 on the year.
All four of these teams will now focus their attention on the 13th Region tournament, which will be held in the coming days at Harlan County High School.
UPDATE: The bracket for this year’s 13th Region volleyball tournament was finalized Wednesday morning at Harlan County High School. On Saturday, October 25, Lynn Camp will play Harlan County (11-15), followed by Whitley County versus South Laurel (16-16), Clay County (22-9) versus Bell County (11-20), and Corbin versus Jackson County (10-22).
The semifinals are scheduled for the evening of Monday, October 27, and the championship will be contested Tuesday, the 28th. Follow the News Journal online and on social media for more updates, and of course, be sure to pick up our next edition on Wednesday, October 29.
