4A powers collide
After showing that they can dig themselves out of a hole in the come-from-behind 35-21 win over Christ School and that they can bury an opponent quickly in Friday’s 45-0 win at Whitley County, the Corbin Redhounds will see how they stack up against a fellow class 4A power as they host Franklin County Friday night.
The Redhounds played without starting quarterback Cameron Combs, but didn’t miss a beat with freshman Kade Elam under center at Whitley County.
Elam completed 12 of 14 passes for 283 yards and two touchdown passes.
With 4:29 remaining in the first quarter, Elam connected with Treyveon Longmire on a 71-yard touchdown pass.
On the Redhounds’ opening drive of the second half, Elam found Seth Mills for a touchdown to extend the lead to 39-0 and start the running clock.
The touchdown catch was one of three touchdowns on the night for Mills, who ran for 180 yards on seven carries and two touchdowns.
Elam threw to five different receivers on the night.
Defensively, the Redhounds held the Colonels to a combined 135 yards of offense on the night. They were led by Brandon Baker who had 11 tackles, including nine solo, and Mikey Neal, who had nine tackles, including eight solo.
Baker, Zayne Hammack and Brody Wells accounts for Corbin’s three interceptions on the night.
Jacob Baker made his four extra points on the night and kicked a 30-yard field goal
The road gets tougher for Coach Tom Greer’s team as they welcome the 2020 Class 4A state runner-up Franklin County Flyers to Campbell Field at 8 p.m. on Friday.
The Flyers lost to Boyle County 31-28 on Dec 18, after earning the right to play at Kroger Field with a 20-12 victory at Johnson Central.
Franklin County is also off to a 2-0 start, defeating Scott County and Western Hills.
In Friday’s 61-0 win over Western Hills, Franklin County ran for 408 yards led by Kaden moorman, who ran for 156 yards on eight attempts with three touchdowns.
The Flyers can and will throw the ball as quarterback Jayden Mattison completed five of 11 passing attempts for 111 yards with two touchdowns and one interception.
