49th district soccer championships set for Saturday, 10/18

The 2014 49th district girls soccer semifinals were held Thursday evening at Corbin Primary School. In game one, the Whitley County Lady Colonels faced South Laurel. Whitley fell behind 9 goals to none in the first half, and the game was called about six minutes into the second half when the Lady Cardinals scored their tenth goal to give them the 10-0 win and qualify them for this year’s district championship match.
Despite their season-ending loss in the district tourney, the Lady Colonels made history this season by becoming the first team in the program’s history to achieve a winning record (10-8), and Head Coach Kelly Sawyers is optimisitc about the future.
"I’m really proud of the girls for accomplishing this winning record," Sawyers said. "I think this team has a very promising future, and we’re excited about next year."

Senior Lady Hound Kaitlyn Waddle
In the late game Thursday, the Corbin Lady Redhounds improved their record to 12-6 on the year with a 6-0 victory over North Laurel, qualifying them to compete in the 49th district championship game Saturday against South Laurel.
Senior Kaitlyn Waddle got things started by scoring a goal with 36:15 left in the first half, followed by two Mady Thompson goals at 29:05 and 18:24. Senior Morgan Boggs then assisted Thompson on a third goal scored with 8:10 left in the half.
A Nikki Wells corner kick with 25:45 left in the game was knocked into the opposing goal by senior Hannah Henegar, and then Boggs scored the final goal of the night for Corbin with 23:00 remaining.

This year’s 49th district soccer championships will be played Saturday, October 18 at Corbin Primary School. The Corbin versus South Laurel girls game will be played at 3:00 PM, followed by the Corbin boys facing off with North Laurel at 5:00 PM.
