3-Point crash claims life of Corbin Man
Police say that Lee apparently suffered some type of medical emergency that caused him to lose control about 3 p.m. and strike several vehicles before knocking two vehicles, which were located at Rains Auto Sales, down a 10-foot embankment where his vehicle also came to rest.
"It’s fortunate that nobody was around. If anybody had been here, it just would have been a disaster," said Rains Auto Sales Owner Danny Rains.
Rains said that Lee struck a 1970’s Volkswagen sports car, and a 1953 Oldsmobile, which were both probably totaled. He valued the two vehicles at about $20,000.
"He was moving. I don’t know if he passed out or what," Rains said. "I saw him come across, and I definitely heard him hit. Those old Oldsmobile’s have real metal and he crushed it."
Whitley County Sheriff’s Deputy Dorman Patrick Jr., who is investigating the accident at the car lot, said that no drug or alcohol involvement was suspected.
Williamsburg Police Officer Brandon White said that Lee was driving on Cemetery Road when he lost control and struck two parked vehicles near the intersection of Rains Street. The vehicle continued at a high rate of speed going onto US25W where it ran a van off the roadway.
From there the vehicle left the roadway at Rains Auto Sales near Three-Point, struck the two parked vehicles, and came to rest down a nearly 10-foot embankment.
Whitley County EMS treated Lee at the scene along with members of the Three-Point Volunteer Fire Department and Williamsburg Fire Department.
An emergency landing zone was set up at the new Whitley County school system soccer complex where an Air Evac Life Team medical helicopter landed, and flew Lee to the University of Kentucky Medical Center where he later died.
Lee’s gold 2005 Buick Lacross was also totaled in the crash. He was the only occupant in the vehicle, Patrick said.
Rains said he has owned a car lot there for about five years, and that this was only the second crash at the lot. He said someone just got their car off the edge of pavement one day, and it dropped over the embankment.
Rains said he has one older vehicle, a 1928 model, that he fortunately didn’t have sitting on the lot Friday.
Sheriff’s Deputies Dave Lennon and Ben Hodge also assisted at the scene.
Visitation will be from 6 – 8 p.m. Wednesday at Croley Funeral Home.
Lee will be laid to rest following graveside services at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Davis Addition of Highland Park Cemetery with Rev. Jim Rhodes officiating.
