259 runners compete in Col. Sanders half marathon and 10k

Downtown Corbin played host to more than 250 runners Saturday as they converged on Depot Street for the second annual Colonel Sanders Half Marathon.
Unlike last year, the event also included a 10K race.
Runners met at the starting line beginning at 8:30 Saturday morning for the half marathon.
Runners came from across the country to participate in the races hailing from as far away as California.
The race raised money for the Corbin Backpack Program, which provides food to students for over the weekends, said Corbin Tourism Director Maggy Monhollen.
At the Corbin City Commission meeting Monday evening, Monhollen told commissioners the money that will be donated from the race will likely be enough to cover one fourth of the program’s annual costs.
While reflecting on the event, Monhollen’s reaction was short and concise, “Wow.”
“The thing about the half marathon that makes me so proud is how the city comes together to pull it off.”
“We work with over 200 people from the city, the school system, University of the Cumberlands, Union College, [and more] to basically roll out the red carpet,” said Monhollen.
The event saw 259 runners participating in the 10K and the half marathon.
“I am so humbled by the number of emails and messages we have received from runners saying what a great race it is, how organized it is, how happy they are they came and ran in it,” said Monhollen.
After a debrief meeting in the next few weeks, the race committee will meet early next year to begin planning the 2022 race.
