15th Annual Whitley County FFA Chapter Redneck Games deemed a success

Bubble gum chewing, moon pie eating, hub cap toss, and nail driving don’t ordinarily sound like competitive events, but in the 15th annual Whitley County FFA Chapter Redneck Games these were only a small part of the fun activities.

Members of the Whitley County Cattlemen’s Association participated by preparing and serving a meal of hotdogs and hamburgers to approximately 130 students in the agriculture department, then they helped out by assisting with scoring the events.

When asked about the purpose of the Redneck Games, Andrew Richardson, chapter reporter said, “It’s not all about just fun and games, but we use it as a recruiting tool to expose newer students to the ag program and FFA. It also provides leadership and life-skills opportunities for student leaders to organize and carry out an event that includes 130 students involved in a lot of activities, all in the span of a little over an hour.”

In addition to the games mentioned, students participated in hill billy golf, corn hole, barrel roll, hay bale toss, seed spitting, tobacco stick throw, cross cut saw, three-legged race, wheelbarrow race, tug of war, and last but not least, greasy pig catch! All participants agreed this was a great and fun event, the only exception being the pig! He appeared to be a bit overwhelmed!

Stuart Hamlin, President of Whitley County Cattlemen’s Association said, ”As an association that promotes agricultural activities in our county, we are always happy to lend our support our local FFA Chapter and be involved in the development of future leaders in the field of agriculture.”
